13th April - Our First Day

After waking at the White House Inn and being given a fantastic breakfast - we've all developed a love for waffles with bacon and maple syrup - we headed out into beautiful Cooperstown. After a brief exploration we returned to the Inn and were delivered to our first presentation, for the Rotary Club of Cooperstown at the Otesaga Hotel.

The presentation seemed to go well, although there were some inevitable first day nerves. The Rotarian's were incredibly supportive, and congratulated us at the end. All of the team have been presented with miniature baseball bats, and we've been warned that Barbara will use hers to calm down any misbehaving team members.

After the meeting we met our host families and spent the remainder of the day with them - Caroline, Helen and Barbara made a brief diversion to do some shopping first. I'd like to give a special mention to my hosts, Richard and Anne Blabey, who have been incredibly welcoming. Richard has told me about the fascinating history of Cooperstown, and the role played by the Clark Foundation (go read up on it, it's an interesting subject).

As James mentioned, we finished the day with Tim Hayes and his wonderful family. Apart from the team we were joined by Tom Lieber, Jim Atwell and Anne Geddes-Atwell. Caroline had a chance to demonstrate her professional skills by entertaining Tim's children, and we spent the night chatting and joking, with the occasional song thrown in for good measure. By the end we were all flagging a little (jet-lag caught up with us at last), so we headed back to our host families.
We're off now to visit the Farm Museum and the Fenimore Museum, and from there to our first vocational trips. There'll be more on that later.

  1. And to think you pulled faces when I tried to tell you of the wonder of bacon and maple syrup.

  2. Customs will let you take on small bottles of maple syrup. I brought tiny ones over to the UK on our trip. And yes, they definitely searched my bags! :)

Of course, that's IF you have room to put anything extra in your luggage on the way home!
